Ouchi-juku

There’s only one of that kind in Japan. Ouchi-Juku post town on the former Nikko to Aizu-Wakamatsu road offers an alignment of thatched roofs – just the way they were seen by travelers back to Edo Period! The only street, very Far-West-like, became a touristic highlight of Fukushima prefecture in the 1980s but is still not as famous as Shirakawa-go, Japan’s other example of thatched roofs.

How to get there?

Ouchi-Juku belongs to Shimogo, about 20 kilometers West of Aizu-Wakamatsu, another of the 100 landscapes of Heisei. The nearest station is Yunokami Onsen on Aizu railway (35 minutes and 1030 yens from Aizu, not included with the JR Pass). A bus is then running from the station to Ouchi-Juku from April to November (20 minutes, 1000 yens for a day pass).
